A resolution adopted by Belgium’s Flemish Parliament calling for stronger economic ties and supporting Taiwan’s meaningful international participation is appreciated by the government and people, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said May 22.
Passed a day earlier with no votes against, the resolution stresses that Taiwan plays a key role in global trade. It calls on its government to deepen exchanges with Taiwan by leveraging current bilateral cooperation in areas spanning culture, economy, education and medical care, and urges the EU to ink investment protection agreements with Taiwan and expand the two sides’ collaboration on supply chain resilience.
The resolution further expresses concerns that China’s continued escalation of military threats to Taiwan may cause serious impacts on the global supply chain, as well as on peace and stability in the region, across Europe and around the world.
According to the MOFA, the resolution follows a similar one passed by the parliament in March 2021, and a cooperation consultation meeting held by the two sides in 2023 discussed topics including business and investment, education, employment and vocational training, public health, sustainable energy, and technology. The actions prove the Belgian region’s staunch support for Taiwan, the ministry said, adding that it will continue to enhance their mutually beneficial partnerships and jointly safeguard the rules-based international order.
